Ruby Cadillac

All About Ruby Cadillac

Ruby was brought to the Jackson County Animal Shelter as a stray in February 2004. As I was making my rounds, I passed by her kennel and mistakenly thought she was Corona. Upon closer inspection, I realized that she looked strikingly similar, but she was indeed not Corona. So I went and sat in the kennel with her for a few minutes and in the short time I sat there I fell madly in love. She snuggled up in my lap and stared up at me. Her name was Emma at the time.

David, Josie and I brought her home that weekend simply as a foster, to give her a break from the stress of the kennels. From the first moment they met, Corona and Ruby were one unit. They wouldn't let each other alone, and when they finally fell asleep... they spooned. It was amazing to see.

We wanted to give her a more fitting name than Emma. We tried all kinds of things, but the one we really loved was Cadillac. Caddie for short. and Miss Caddie would have none of it, she wouldn't pay any attention to this name we had picked for her. I remembered seeing a Pit Bull online somewhere waiting to be adopted with cropped ears and a patch over her eye named Ruby, so the name kept wanting to come out when I looked at this Emma dog. We tried it out, and she seemed to like it. She perked up when we would call her Ruby. So, we did the only thing we could do and kept it... both of them. She became Ruby Cadillac, or as we came to know her... just our sparkling RUBY.

When Monday rolled around, David suggest we take Ruby back to the shelter, we just weren't ready for another dog yet. Reluctantly, we did and she was adopted out to a family 2 days later.

After a week with her new family, she was taken to be spayed and given a rabies shot. A few days after that, they brought her back to the shelter claiming they were afraid she might attack the family's poodle... the poodle had become food aggressive since Ruby (then known as "Daisy") had come to their home. They were afraid if their dog started something... Daisy would finish it. She never got the chance to prove them wrong.

Daisy was returned and reverted back to Ruby. When we found out she was back, we took it as a sign and immediately went down and picked her up. Ruby was home to stay.

In the time she spent with us, we realized this was not an average dog. She was so much more intelligent then we had given her credit for. It was uncanny. Ruby seemed to understand what we were talking about, or saying, or even the emotions we felt... without us even being in the room. If we got into an argument on the way home, she knew. She would sulk around the house until we made up.

Ruby was about two and a half years when she adopted us on February 20, 2004. We were planning a birthday party for her in March of 2005.

She was a dog like no other, with a tail like a whip, a bad case of the wiggles, and a staring problem that could send you into a coma. She always won staring contests...always.
